F451 Reading Assignment 4: Days 2 & 3
Lesson 14 of 16
Objective: Students will apply language and reading comprehension skills as they read each section of the novel, while continuing to build upon current skill set and abilities
Inside the Novel booklet is a two page activity where students are asked to analyze literary devices and figurative language from throughout the novel. I give the students 10 minutes to complete half of this activity each day of this lesson. As they are working, I make my way throughout the room in order to monitor progress and provide support if needed. Since we have worked extensively on literary devices and figurative language throughout the year, the students are typically very successful with this activity and require very little support from me.
I provide the students with the remainder of class (roughly 40 minutes) each of these two days in order for them to immerse themselves and finish the novel by the end of the second day. A majority of students are able to finish even sooner and use the remaining time to work on the comprehension questions in the novel booklet for this last section. The few students who were unable to complete the novel in this time frame are given the opportunity to check out a copy of the book for the evening and finish up at home. I would much prefer these students take a little extra time to complete the reading than pretend to have finished in order to be "done on time" and miss out on how the novel concludes. They have worked hard and invested themselves in this novel, to miss out on the end would be an awful waste.
Regardless of when the students finish the reading, they are expected to have the comprehension questions completed for class the next day, so we are able to discuss and wrap things up neatly and efficiently at that time.
