Today, I wanted to review figurative language terms and introduce new terms to the students. I used a Figurative Language Power Point that my department created together. The intent was to use it as a review and an introduction to new terms.
I passed out a reference sheet for students to glue into their notebooks and encouraged them to add examples and details that would help them differentiate the various terms. Students also took out a loose-leaf paper to use as we interacted with the power point.
Using screens 2 – 27, as a class we reviewed similes, metaphors, personification, hyperboles, onomatopoeia, idioms, oxymorons, and alliterations. Each term was defined with an example and a simple interactive activity to make sure that students understood the term.
The next section of the power point addressed figurative language terms that most students had not learned in previous years. These terms included: sensory imagery, assonance, consonance, allusion, and cliché (screens 28 – 38). The definitions were included in their Figurative Language Resource paper glued into their notebooks, however, I required students to copy the examples of each of the new terms into their notebooks.
As a closure to this activity, students watched a rap about figurative language from Flocabulary.
