Objective

SWBAT analyze the structure of a personal narrative and explain its importance to the meaning.

Big Idea

All parts of a narrative help create a thought-provoking text!

Chunk 1

15 minutes

Today we continued analyzing "Fish Cheeks".   Students took out their passages from yesterday in which they had closely read the narrative by Amy Tan.

Using the guided questions in the second section of the text, we discussed the meaning of “incident.”  As a class we decided it meant an event.  Students realized that numerous events lead up to the climax of a narrative, and we would consider the climax the “main incident” of the narrative.

We then discussed methods that authors use to “hook” a reader by reviewing the Lead Types powerpoint.

After viewing the various types of leads, as a class we re-read Chunk 1 of “Fish Cheeks” to decide upon the lead type used.  We decided it was a combination of “Snap Shot” lead and “Question” lead, since Amy Tan is describing the characters and incorporating questions to provide a vision of the setting.

Chunk 2

10 minutes

After addressing the question about transitions, students circled transitions that were used to move the story along.  As a class, we listed the transition on the board to recognize how these words helped the story progress chronologically throughout the evening.  We discussed how transitions can be specific transitions or prepositional phrases.

Chunk 3

15 minutes

Next, we read Chunk 3 focusing upon how Amy Tan reflected back upon her embarrassing experience.  Students jotted down what lesson Amy learned from this incident and what lesson can they – the student – take away and apply to their own lives.

We then shared as a whole class the narrative theme and the lessons students could take forward in their life, stressing that this part is the theme of the narrative - what we learned and can take forward in life.
