I wanted to give my students an overview of sea turtles before we explored its life cycle. We watched a short YouTube video about sea turtles that highlights some of its features. This was enough to get them excited about learning more.
I created a PowerPoint, Life Cycle of a Sea Turtle, in order to use images and videos to explain the life cycle of the sea turtle. Using the PowerPoint, helped me touch upon different learning styles as well as present the life cycle by scaffolding the content and the academic vocabuary.
I created Examining The Life Cycle Of A Sea Turtle Focus Page to use along with the PowerPoint. The focus page has a good mix of different types of questions. There are sentence frames, fill in the blanks, opportunities to draw and illustrate each stages, as well as constructed response questions. I tried to offer questions that would allow each learner an opportunity to be successful.
After exploring the life cycle of the sea turtle, I felt it was important to have an open discussion about the patterns they see emerging every time we examine a species' life cycle. I wanted my student to make connections to concepts that we have covered in this unit. To that end, my students answered this question in small groups, and then shared out, "Think about what we learned about this reptile's life cycle. Do you see any similarities or differences to the other life cycles we have studied?"
