Objective

SWBAT gather information from digital sources, take brief notes, and sort evidence into provided categories in a step book.

Big Idea

I took students to the computer lab where each had access to a laptop computer. I started the lesson by reminding students that researching involves gathering information from multiple sources.

Modeling

15 minutes

I took students to the computer lab where each had access to a laptop computer. I started the lesson by reminding students that researching involves gathering information from multiple sources. Reading multiple sources allows you to become more of an expert on your topic. You want to learn as much information as possible about your famous person so that you can write an informative essay and be prepared to answer questions during the Biography Tea.

I conducted a brief review on using keywords to conduct an online search. (Students knew how to open a browser to access the Internet.) Students recalled that you can type the person’s name or use short phrases.  I displayed my laptop screen on the SmartBoard to demonstrate searching for Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. I modeled reading the information aloud and writing brief notes on the appropriate section of the step book with a colored pencil. 

Independent Practice

20 minutes

For independent practice, students researched online to find information about their famous person and took brief notes in their step book with a colored pencil. I had turned on Google’s SafeSearch feature to lessen the chance of students encountering inappropriate content. I walked around the lab assisting students as needed.

Assessment

10 minutes

Students were adept at taking brief notes and writing in the appropriate category at this point. I informally assessed them by noting whether or not they had taken notes written in a different color.
