Objective

SWBAT write the final draft of their poems in their poetry books.

Big Idea

Completing the study of poetry

Introduction

At the beginning of the unit, I gave students a rough draft booklet, which contains a page for each type of poetry, along with its definition, and space to practice their own examples. I will ask them to have this booklet with them for today, along with their new final draft poetry book that I handed out the day before.

Mini-Lesson

10 minutes

I begin by telling students that today they will continue their final poetry book.  I tell them that their job today is to finish writing each poem in its designated spot in the book and adding an illustration to match. I remind them to use their best handwriting and think about the revisions they made. 

Guided Practice

45 minutes

Transition Time: Every day after the mini-lesson, students get 5 minutes of Prep Time to gather materials, find a comfy spot, use the bathroom, and anything else they might need to do to prepare for 40 minutes of uninterrupted Independent Writing.  

 

Guided Practice: Today, I would be conferencing with students right at their comfy spots and monitoring their work to make sure it is their best quality work. 

Closing

5 minutes

At the end of 40 minutes, I remind students that their job during writing time was to complete their final draft. I then tell them that we have officially wrapped up our poetry work. Writer’s Workshop has come to an end.
