Myth Madness: Using Technology to Share Favorite Myths (Day 2)

Big Idea

In this lesson, students will continue to create a Google Drive Presentation utilizing their graphic organizer template as well as to begin to use some advanced features.

Enroll Students Into Learning

5 minutes

Today, my students start out at their seats and we discuss how we started our Google Drive Presentations yesterday on our favorite Greek myths.  I ask the students if they have any questions about their work from yesterday.  One student does ask if they’ll need to share their work with me again today after working if they’ve already shared their work with me yesterday.  I tell the student that this is a great question, and probably one that many students are curious about.  I remind the students that Google Drive automatically shares with me any work they do at any time, as long as they’ve shared their file with me at least once.  There is no need to share it again, as long as they have shared it with me already.  Excellent question!

Experience Learning

5 minutes

Today we will continue our work in the computer lab, so if the students are not finished entering their text, that will be their first task.  However, today, we’ll also add two other features that students can work on today: adding a background or theme and changing the text font, color and size.  I begin again today by having a student guide me through the process of getting into Google Drive and finding and reopening our work that was started yesterday. 

Once here though, I share the background and theme features with the students.  These are simply accomplished by using the buttons along the top menu, but as I demonstrate for the students, they can see how the background and or theme option really adds some pizzazz to their presentation.

Lastly, I share with the students how to change the text font, size, and color.  This is another way students can personalize their presentations.

Now that we have walked through the process of getting into and working with these two features, I tell the students that it’s time to get working!  Today, we’ll focus finishing any text, and then changing the background or theme as well as the text font, size, and color in our presentation today.  In our school, we have access to a device for all of our students by visiting our school computer lab.  At this point, I remind students to make sure they have their graphic organizer templates and then we line up to head to the computer lab.

Demonstrate Skills

10 minutes

Once in the computer lab, students get logged in and get started on their work.   After logging in, the students are really in charge of their work.  They work slide by slide and add their information and opinions, change the background or theme, and change the text font, size, and color.   As the students work, I circulate and really just check in on students making sure they’re working okay and offering assistance as needed.

At the end of our time together today, I confirm for the students that even though we’re out of time today, we’ll come back tomorrow and work some more on our presentations.  We’ll continue our important work tomorrow!
