I have our daily schedule written on the board and will ask students to help me measure the amount of time we spend on each thing
Who can tell me what their favorite subject is? And how much time do you think we spend on it? What do we call it when we are working on figuring out or measuring how much time has passed?
I think it’s important to relate a concept to students lives to help them relate it to their background knowledge. Many concepts, especially elapsed time, are challenging and very abstract for students.
How can we use our T-chart to measure elapsed time? What intervals of time make it easier to measure elapsed time? (MP4) Today we are going to use this knowledge to create a “perfect school day” schedule, and you are in charge!
How much time would you like to spend on your favorite subject? How about recess? While you design your school day, you get to choose how much time we should spend at each subject. You will need to write out the schedule, with each subject, and you will need to measure the elapsed time for each subject (MP6). After you get that finished, you will need to defend your choices. You need to write a couple of sentences for each block of time explaining why you chose that amount of time and what that amount of time helps you to accomplish (MP3).
Everyone had their own ideas about what their perfect schedule might be, and it was so interesting for me to see and read about. I want you all to see what your classmates have come up with so set your work on your table and we will do a gallery walk to check out one another’s work. Remember to read and think to yourself as you walk around and observe what your teammates have done!
