In our previous lesson, we read "The Story of Ruby Bridges" by Robert Coles. Today we will read about Ruby's story from a book written by Ruby herself. The book is entitled "Through My Eyes." I purposely started with the book by Robert Coles because "Through My Eyes" is so much more detailed and full of emotion that I am sure it will be more apparent by reading the book after the biography by Robert Coles.
To begin our lesson today, we will summarize "The Story of Ruby Bridges" by Robert Coles as a class. I will then introduce "Through My Eyes" to the students and explain to them that this book is the story of Ruby Bridges written by Ruby in her own words. I will ask them to be thinking about similarities and differences between the books as we read because we will be talking about them in our next lesson.
Coles, R. (1995). The Story of Ruby Bridges. New York, NY : Scholastic Inc.
Bridges, R. (1999). Through My Eyes. New York, NY : Scholastic Inc.
This is a GREAT story full of emotion and detail. There are a few places however where there are some hateful words that were used against Ruby. I want to be sure to explain to the students that these are hateful words. This book was written for an adult audience and has some situations where explanation is necessary for student understanding. For these reasons, I will pull the students to the floor and read the book to the students so that we can discuss the book as we go.
After we have read "Through My Eyes" by Ruby Bridges, we will discuss some of the similarities and differences between this book and "The Story of Ruby Bridges" by Robert Coles. I will then have the students create a top hat graphic organizer by splitting a blank piece of paper into thirds. In the first section, they will write things that are unique to the Robert Cole's Story. In the second section, the students will write things that are unique to Ruby Brigde's story. In the third section, the students will write things that both stories have in common.
Once my students have completed the graphic organizer, I will have them share their ideas with a partner.
