Objective

SWBAT analyze a parody and determine the connotative meaning and effect of figurative language upon the text.

Selecting a Parody

5 minutes

I provided several parodies by Roald Dahl for the students to analyze in small groups.  Yesterday, we practiced analyzing a parody as a whole class.

Students could choose from: Cinderella, Three Little Pigs, or Jack and the Beanstalk.

TP-CASTT

20 minutes

In their small groups, students selected, read, and analyzed their poem using TP-CASTT, a strategy used for poem analysis.

This strategy provides a process for the students to organize their interpretation and analysis of poems in an all-inclusive format to address numerous elements of poetry.

 

 


Poetic Device Analysis

25 minutes

Next students wrote a Poetic Device Analysis, explaining how two devices were used and impacted the parody.  They used the Poetic Device Analysis template, previously glued in their notebooks, as a guide.

In order to ensure that rigor was addressed in this lesson, the template provided a guide for students to include details about the impact of figurative language within the parodies.  In alignment with Common Core Writing Standards, as students used the analysis template as a guide, they intentionally incorporated details, textual evidence, and examples to convey ideas.
