SWBAT determine who is telling the story of Number the Stars and then analyze how another character would change the way it is told.

Big Idea

Students will select another character and explain and write examples of how their point of view would make the story different from their point of view.

Reading Review

5 minutes

The start of this lesson is reviewing what we know so far. I lead the class in a popcorn discussion. This is where one students starts the topic and chooses the next student to add to the discussion. This continues until we have built a great knowledge base to start the lesson. 

I facilitate the review and ask clarifying questions as needed. I also try to only help when I feel they have forgotten to add a key detail that we need to remember and that will be helpful to understanding the book in the future. 

Compare Points of View

15 minutes

The next part requires their whiteboards. They need to draw a line down the middle and I let them know that they will be comparing today.

With their line created, I have them turn to their elbow partner and ask them to discuss who is telling the story Number the Stars. As they talk, I remind them to also explain to their partner how they know this is true. When they have come to an agreement, they need to decide who is telling the story and to add this name to the left column they created on their whiteboard. I then ask them to include their evidence under the name in a list using bullets.

On the other side they will be working alone and I ask them to really push themselves to make connections and back up their thinking with evidence. For the right hand side, I ask them to choose any character from the book and give four events from the story that would be told differently from their point of view. I model this on the board using Click Clack Moo. I decide to tell the story from the duck's point of view and model an event that would be told differently based on it. 

It is now their turn and I encourage them to use their books to help them. I will lead a discussion when we finish so that students can share what they have written.
