Objective

SWBAT analyze two poems comparing form, style, and purpose (poet's message).

Reveal poet's purpose and message.

Mini-lesson

10 minutes

Students will demonstrate similarities and differences between poems by analyzing metaphor, form, and the poet's purpose using a Venn Diagram.  

"Sometimes a poet writes to show admiration and appreciation of something in nature.  Listen to these dragonfly poems."

Read 4 dragonfly poems.

Discuss and annotate text underneath document camera with students.

Ask, "What do you think the poets' message is for these poem and how do you know?" Have students turn and compare ideas.  Remember to include details to support your ideas." Then share out.

I'm anticipating students will say, "The poet's purpose was to express the beauty and wonder of the dragonfly because it says...

 

Setting students up for Success:

In a minute you will be working in a small group.  Your task is to compare and contrast one of the dragonfly poems you just read and discussed with this mirror Dragonfly poem.

Use this Venn Diagram to capture your thinking about the two poems.

 

 

Small group work

20 minutes

Break students into smaller groups to work with push-in teachers, CityYear, and student teacher.  The group sizes are relatively small, (about 6 per group) so all students will have immediate feedback and support.

Students are in mixed groups including ELL, LD, Gen Ed.  because I want  the students sharing ideas, listening to each other, and adding on based on the discussion.

*Decide on which Nature Dragonfly poem will be contrasted with Mirror dragonfly poem.

* Write the titles at the top of the Venn Diagram

*Direct students to first look at the form of the poems. (wait for them to discover the magic of the mirror poem).

* Next, read the Mirror Dragonfly poem aloud

* Have students annotate by reading and sketching, noticing metaphors and strong feeling words.

*Share with each other.

*Direct students to fill in how the poems are alike first in the intersection of the circle.

*Next how are the two poems different?  Encourage discussion.

Fill in under the titles.

Have all students return to their seats.  Lead a class discussion by calling on one representative from each group to share their Venn Diagram under the doc camera.
