Students will be able to write the value of numbers according to their place value.

The value of a number is determined by place value.

## Whole Class Review

10 minutes

In review lessons, I like to use various strategies to revisit the skill.  Because it is a review skill, there is not a lot of conversation between the students.  The purpose of the review before the state test is to prepare the students to work independently in order to be successful on the end of year assessment.

To begin the lesson, I call the students to the carpet.  I find that the students pay more attention while I'm at the Smart board if they are near me.  I begin by sharing a video lesson at the following site:

Because this is a review skill, I give the students a brief lesson on naming the value of a number by using a place value chart.

To give the students a conceptual understanding, I use a place value chart to model finding the value of a number.

First, I place the number in the place value chart.  Next, for each digit, I write the number in the correct place, then the remaining numbers are zeros.  For example, the 2 is in the ten thousands place.  Therefore, we are counting by ten thousands.  The value of the 2 is 20,000.  The students can clearly see this by looking at the place value chart.

## Independent Practice

15 minutes

The students will practice the skill independently because they will have to work alone for the state test.  Each student is given a Place Value.docx.  They must solve the problem by using the place value chart.  Then the students must select the correct multiple choice answer.  (The place value chart is important because all students are not auditory learners.  Also, with 1/4 of my class being English Language Learners, the place value chart helps them understand the concept better.)

As the students work on the problems, I walk around to monitor their level of understanding.  If the students are having a difficult time, I will ask guiding questions to help lead the students to the answer.

Possible Questions:

1. What can you tell me about the places on the place value chart?

2.  How do you know the value of these numbers?

3.  Which place is bigger, the hundreds place or the thousands place?  How do you know?

## Share/Discuss/Analze Solution

15 minutes

Upon completing the independent practice, I call the students back together as a whole.  I feel that it is very important to close out the lesson by sharing answers.  By doing this, it allows the extra opportunity to reach any students that still do not understand the concept.

I call on students to share their answers.  All students are not auditory learners; therefore, it is very important for the students to see the examples of work (Student Work - Place Value Review.jpg).  I use my document camera to display the student work on the Smart board.

Students are allowed to ask questions during this closing of the lesson.  The most important aspect for me is that I have identified any students that need 1-on-1 or small group remediation.
