Today's lesson is a continuation of yesterday's lesson, Poetry is Music. First, students will revisit the meaning of vocabulary words in the poem by writing a synonym on a copy of the poem "Zin! Zin! Zin A Violin". Next, they will practice reading the poem with rhythm and rhyme with a partner or in a small group to develop fluency.
Divide the students into smaller groups based on the need for vocabulary development. Some groups will benefit from going slower through each stanza led by a teacher. Teacher reads the first stanza and directs students to underline important vocabulary words such as mournful, silken, gliding, sliding, trombone, and solo. (I have included a copy of the text with bolded vocabulary words that I think students will need to learn their meanings.)
Students underline these words. Teacher asks for synonyms for each word and students suggest another word that means something similar. They then write the synonym above the word in the stanza. Students draw picture of the instrument.
Students then read the stanza over in their head and then altogether as a small group.
Other groups will be more independent. Students will work with several other students reading, underlying, generating synonyms and illustrating each stanza. Annotating some words in the poem to show the meaning of them.
After this close study they will practice reading the poem with fluency, rhythm and accenting the beat of the poem.
After studying the vocabulary and drawing pictures of each stanza, students in the small groups listen to the teacher read the first seven stanzas of the poem "Zin! Zin!Zin! A Violin". Next students offer to read the poem one stanza at a time.
Students who worked in a small group or partnerships will practice reading the poem with each other, deciding how they want to share the reading task.
