Today students read the passage, "The Titanic," a non-fiction text. With trying to increase non-fiction reading abilities, I asked students to recall how to preview a non-fiction text. We have practiced these strategies numerous times throughout the year.
Pre-reading Strategies for Non-Fiction texts
read the title, sub-titles
review bold/highlighted words
look at pictures and read captions
examine side-bars, maps, and/or other segregated informational text.
Next students independently previewed the text and made a prediction about “The Titanic” and shared ideas as a whole class. We also discussed why “Titanic” is italicized in the title – the name of a ship.
As students read the text, they marked it by highlighting unknown and quality descriptive words. This strategy is a Metacognitive Technique that students have used continuously throughout the year.

However, today I asked them to specifically use questioning skills. In the margins students wrote questions that came to mind as they read.
After independently reading this text, we discussed the questions that students asked themselves – were the questions ever answered, why did a particular question come to mind as they read.
In the past, the class has practiced an Eliminating Answers Technique for multiple choice questions. Students answered the follow-up questions and used this technique for answers with which they were unsure.
As a class we reviewed the answers and discussed the reasoning behind the difficult questions.
