Meet Allie the Alligator

Students will determine if numbers in a set are: greater than, less than, or equal to.

Big Idea

Kindergartners love meeting characters! In this lesson, Allie the Alligator is introduced to help us eat some numerals.


20 minutes

To begin this lesson, I gather students on the carpet near our math wall. I ask children to recall what skill we are working on in math. I give them a hint, by saying, "It has something to do with 2 sets or 2 numbers."

Students begin telling me, "more than", "less than", "bigger", "smaller", and so on. As we learn new concepts throughout the year, we place vocabulary onto the math wall. I then introduce the "greater than", "less than", and "equal to" cards to my class. These cards are put on to the math wall.

I then ask students to stand up and move to the white board. This transition should be quick, and I address this further in my reflection.

We then watch a quick 3 minute YouTube video, Greater Than or Less Than With Allie the Alligator. I like this video because it gives my students another way to visualize what can be a difficult concept for them. It also ends up being interactive, as my students respond to the video. I have attached a small clip of us viewing the video.

After the video, I display today's task, an Allie the Alligator worksheet. This activity requires students to look at the 2 given numbers, and fill in the correct symbol: greater than, less than, or equal to. We do 3 examples together on the board. I make sure to include an example of each: greater than, less than, or equal to. I call on students to come up and help fill in the correct symbol. 

Independent Work

10 minutes

Once we have completed the examples together, I send students off for independent completion of the task. I remind students that Allie ALWAYS eats the bigger number.

I pull a small group of students that I know struggle with number sense to help them along. With the exception of these students, the rest of the class completed the assignment quickly and correctly. I have included student video of a smartie showing me what he did!
