Drama Introduction Lesson 2 -Labeling the Script

Objective

SWBAT identify the parts and "see" the structure of a drama.

Warm Up

5 minutes

Today is Trailer Tuesday, so I will show students a book trailer or two depending on length. I select trailers for new release books and great books that students aren't picking up. (The link provided will take you to an earlier lesson with my reflection explaining more about my use of book trailers.)

There are several sites online for locating book trailers.  A quick search on you tube will locate several. Of course, always preview the trailer before showing a class.

Lesson

20 minutes

Today's lesson is a follow up to yesterday's.  Now that students have worked with the vocabulary of Drama, I want them to interact with text.

I will ask students to take a handout from the caddy.  This is a photo copy of the first full page of the play we are going to read in the April 2014 edition of Scholastic Scope.  I will also display the page on the SMART board.

Next, we will locate examples of what we discussed yesterday and label them.  I will ask students to come to the board and demonstrate, but to also label the copy they have for their reference.

As with class yesterday, this is very conversational.  I want my students to be comfortable and familiar with the structure and components of a script.

Bookfair Visit

20 minutes

This is reality…We will visit the Bookfair today.  It stinks that it takes away time in class, but honestly it furthers my goal of creating lifelong readers.  How can I expect this if I don't value a good trip to the "book store"?  In the end, hopefully more books will end up in homes in my community.

Wrap Up

10 minutes

To wrap up class today, as students return from the Bookfair, we will read and discuss Scholastic Scope's "The Horrors of Nazi Germany".  This piece is paired with the dramatic adaptation of The Book Thief to prepare students for the historical context of the piece.  

If you follow me you know my students have read about and discussed the Holocaust extensively this year.  However, a refresher will be beneficial, and I have new students who were not here at that time.
