Narrative

"The Whipping Boy" Assessment

45 minutes

Now that we have finished reading the novel, "The Whipping Boy" by Sid Fleischman, we are going assess the comprehension skills of the students.  This unit focused on teaching comprehension skills explicitly.  This will be open book assessment for the novel "The Whipping Boy" by Sid Fleischman.

For this assessment I have chosen to let the students work on the test with an open book. In our state, the new common core assessments require the students to be able to pull information from the text to support their answers. I feel it is important for the students to be able to practice finding evidence within the text to support their answers.  Plus, part of the comprehension strategies we focused on was rereading a text to better comprehend. I figure that our ultimate goal as teachers is to get the students to understand and synthesize the text. To me it is giving the students one last chance to get to that level of comprehension.
