Connect: I will say, “Yesterday we read Song of the Trees looking for a theme, then we categorized the theme and wrote long about it. Today we are going to upgrade our theme. Turn and tell the person next to you, what does it mean to upgrade something?”
Teach: I will say, “In order to show a deeper understanding of the text, I am going to practice the skill revising my theme and the strategy using my categories to upgrade my theme. The process I will use is as follows:
1) Re-read my theme and categories from yesterday
2) Think to myself, “How could I make this theme better?”
3) Revise my theme
4) Write if I agree with how the author crafted this theme.”
Yesterday I re-read the text for the theme; “Standing up for yourself can be hard. Then I categorized my theme by “acts of bravery/acts of cowardice.” Hmm… I am thinking I could upgrade my theme by re-writing it as, “In life you have to be brave to stand up to cowards.”
Active Engagement: I will say, “Turn and tell your partner your upgraded theme.” I will check for understanding listening to every level of learner (at least 3 students-one who is at standard, one is approaching standard, and one who is above standard).
Once I upgrade my theme, I am going to do another write long, but I am going to ask myself, Do I agree with how the author crafted this theme?” I will review with students the five elements of a story and show student how I think about them as I think about how the author crafted the story.
I will show them an example of my writing using the thought prompts. I will reread the part from yesterday which I used to revise my theme and show the students how I think about how Mildred Taylor crafted my upgraded theme.
Active Engagement: I will say, “Reread the part of the text you read yesterday, the turn and tell your partner if you agree or disagree how the author crafted the theme.” I will check for understanding listening to every level of learner (at least 3 students-one who is at standard, one is approaching standard, and one who is above standard).
Closing of Active Engagement: I will say, “Remember, in order to show a deeper understanding of the text, great readers and writers practice the skill revising my theme and the strategy using categories to upgrade thier theme. The re-read their initial thoughts on the theme, they revise their theme, then write if they agree with how the author crafted this theme.”
Independent Practice:Students will be directed to complete a "write long" using the thought prompts poster below about their upgraded theme (as their claim) and then stating their opinion on how Mildred Taylor crafted the theme.

I believe that the end of the lesson should be an assessment of the days’ learning; therefore it should be independent work. I always end class with an “exit ticket” in which students write down the response to a question. For today, students will turn in their "write longs."
