For this unit, we have been learning comprehension strategies and applying these skills as read "The Whipping Boy" by Sid Fleischman. This lesson will focus on the comprehension strategy of summarizing the text when we read. I have created this unit to explicitly teach my students comprehension strategies or "tools" to assist them in better comprehending complex text. To begin this lesson, I will start with a PowerPoint which explains what a summary is. I have included the PowerPoint in the resources. The PowerPoint also includes a text to practice creating a summary with the students. I will have the students use their white boards and dry erase markers to summarize the text. After the students have created their summaries, we will share the summaries with a partner. The partners will give each other ideas on how to improve their summaries. (I strategically choose the partners so that my struggling reader/writers will be with a partner who can support them through the process.

Now that we have practice at writing summaries, we will read our next section of "The Whipping Boy" by Sid Fleischman and summarize the text we have read so far. We have been reading "The Whipping Boy" during this unit as we have been learning comprehension skills. For this lesson, we will be reading chapters eight and nine.
The students have been reading "The Whipping Boy" independently so that they can better practice the comprehension skills to improve their own reading comprehension. After they finish reading chapters eight and nine, I will have the students apply their knowledge of summaries by writing a summary on the text we have read in "The Whipping Boy" this far.
When the summaries are completed, the students will once again have the chance to work with a partner. The partners will each read their summaries and then give each other pointers on how they could improve their summaries.
