One thing I have noticed about your work is all of the unique and different ways you are thinking about problem solving to solve math problems around you. I am even learning new problem solving skills and tools just from looking at the work you’re doing!
Today I want to show you a new way that I learned from Ms. Smart. I like to call it a part-part-whole picture (MP4). See, pictures sometimes help me visualize my problem and then making solving easier.
Today I want you to focus on what you know about addition, and to think about what words and tools you can find within addition problems to make solving easier. You are going to create your own story problems on 4 squares and then show me how you solved it. You can try the part-part-whole model to see if it helps you picture the problem, or you may use another tool that’s helpful for you (MP1). Make sure that the person who reads your problem knows what kind of math question you are asking them so that they can come up with a plan for solving!
I give extended time today for thinking about word problems. Students often get lost in the language of the problem, and have difficulty determining whether to add or subtract. Today I want students to focus their thinking on what makes an addition problem.
In subsequent days we will practice with subtraction, multiplication, and division. I believe the more strategies students have for problem solving, and the more practice they have creating problems of their own, the easier it will be to determine how to solve word problems.
