## Objective

SWBAT display data using a histogram as well as use histograms to analyze data.

Histogram Instagram: A snapshot of the life of a data set.

## Curriculum Reinforcer

10 minutes

Students will complete 3 questions to review previous concepts taught in units 1 through 5. The curriculum reinforcer, is a daily practice piece that is incorporated into almost every lesson to help my students to retain skills and conceptual understanding from earlier lessons. My strategy is to use Spiraled Review to help my students retain what they learned during the earlier part of the year. This will help me to keep mathematical concepts fresh in the students mind so that the knowledge of these concepts become a part of students' long term memories.

## Engagement

10 minutes

To open up today's lesson I will display a histogram and ask, “What kind of information does this histogram give us?”

I am looking for my students to answer with statements such as:

• Interval data
• Number of items in an interval
• Number of items in a data set
• Possible Data clusters
• The shape of the data

I will then as, "What kind of information does this histogram NOT give us?"

• I am looking form my students to answer with statements such as:
• You cannot find the mean using a histogram
• You cannot find the mode using a histogram
• You cannot find the range using a histogram
• You cannot calculate any specific data measures using a histogram

## Instructon & Teacher Modeling

10 minutes

In today’s instructional piece, I will show my students step by step how to create a frequency table and use that frequency table to create a histogram. During this process, I will be sure to pull understanding from students concerning what information a histogram can give us and what information a histogram cannot give us.

Also, during this instruction, I will be sure to emphasize the meaning of an interval as well as how a histogram should be labeled.

I have attached a video of how to create a frequency table when given a set of data. And, then use that frequency table to create a histogram.

Also attached to this section of this lesson is a document that contains some pretty good notes pertaining to the topic of this lesson. It would make a great handout to students.

## Try It Out

5 minutes

To give this a try, my students will use the following data set to create their own frequency table and histogram with my guidance.

Student Scores on Unit Math Test:

 75 82 94 96 92 100 54 68 78 86 92 64 78 84 82 96 98 100 58 62 78 92 88 92 100 98 96 82 76 86

## Independent Exploration

20 minutes

Students will be put in six to eight groups. Each group will be given a set of data (3 or 4 groups will be given the same data for a total of 3 or 4 sets of data so that students can compare how different groups compiled the data). Students will have to create a frequency table and a histogram using the data given.

## Closing Summary

15 minutes

Each group will place their chart paper from their task on the board. Those groups that completed the same data will be compared. The class and I will be looking to see if each group decided on the same size intervals. A group discussion will commence based upon what is seen in each of the data displays presented.
