I begin the lesson by explaining to students that African Americans have gone through a lot over the years - from slavery, to segregation, to freedom. I explain to my African American students that they have a rich heritage and a responsibility to do something positive with their lives. I tell them that men, women, boys, and girls participated in the struggle for freedom for African Americans and we are reaping the benefits today of those struggles. I explain to them that today we will be conducting research on major events and influential people in African American history.
I assign students partners and distribute the list of suggested research topics (see attachment). I inform students that they are to write a brief narrative and select appropriate photos about their assigned topic. Whatever they don't finish during class time is to be completed for homework.
