[THIS IS THE 5th PART OF 7 PARTS IN A SEQUENCE OF LESSONS FOR THE FIRST "MINI-UNIT" OF THIS SEMESTER.]
At this point, student blogs are finished, including all of the components I require for "set-up." Students have also created a few media-based posts, and they now have a rudimentary understanding of how to use the Blogger tool for their work. Now it is time to actually add some written content!
For this lesson (which is essentially just a period of "guided practice" as students write), I ask students to use my custom search engine (for Book Reviews), found on my blog in the upper, right-hand corner, and locate at least one book review for their "expertise book" (which is referred to in a lesson in the first part of the Argument of Fact unit). (You may want to cross-reference this lesson, which is also part of my curriculum.)
I ask students to save this book review (or book reviews) as bookmark(s), so they may refer to it later and/or share this with me.
Here's the "prompt" for the first, "official" written blog entry:
It is time for you to write your first “official”/required blog post … Please, identify your “expertise” book by author and title and describe why you picked this book. Do some reading about the book; use a book review of the book FROM my custom search engine (upper right corner of my blog). Find a review and give it a read. What do you hope to learn from this book? What do you know about the author? [Style note: you are an actual WRITER on your blog, so make it sound as such … do not think of this as an “assignment” for school but approach this as a “scholar.”]
As students work on this "prompt" -- posting to their blogs -- I walk around the lab and offer whatever help I can.
