Objective

SWBAT write a interesting, catchy lead with a partner for a fictional piece and apply that to the writing of their own lead.

Big Idea

Pairing up to put the first piece in place.

Warm Up

5 minutes

Today is Trailer Tuesday, so I will show students a book trailer or two depending on length. I select trailers for new release books and great books that students aren't picking up. (The link provided will take you to an earlier lesson with my reflection explaining more about my use of book trailers.)

There are several sites online for locating book trailers.  A quick search on you tube will locate several. Of course, always preview the trailer before showing a class.

Lesson

30 minutes

To open today's lesson,  I will ask students to take two handouts from the caddy. The first handout includes both an explanation and examples of leads/hooks.  On the second handout there are 15 topics.

After reviewing what a lead is and the different types, students will be paired up and assigned one of the topics.  The goal is to decide which side of the topic they would want to argue and craft a lead that not only effectively introduces the topic, but also allows students to acknowledge the opposing side.

As students complete their task, they will share their lead by posting it on Edmodo by number so every student has access to all ideas.  After ample time has elapsed, we will review the leads.

Independent Practice

15 minutes

At this point in the lesson, I want students to apply what they have practiced to their own argument. So, I will ask students to craft a lead for the their own “in progress” argument piece.

Wrap up

5 minutes

To wrap up, students will send their lead to me on Edmodo as an exit slip. I will review the leads to provide feedback tomorrow.

Since we are using the digital classroom, this can be posted at the end of the period, after school or late in the evening which allows students to work at their own pace.
