In my lesson openers I always have a "connect" in which I connect students' thinking about yesterday's lesson to today's lesson. I then have a "teach" in which I model for students the lesson of the day and also have them try it out. When I think about my modeling, I use three categories; skill, strategy, and process. I model by stating the skill to the students, then giving them a strategy in which to use the skill, followed by the process to try out the strategy.
Connect: I will say, “At this point you have written two drafts. In order to remember all of the components of a persuasive essay in our third draft in addition to adding our new thinking about ethos, pathos, logos.
Teach: I will say, “In order write a third draft of a third idea for persuasive essay, I am going to practice the skill of reading my feedback from my second and first drafts and the strategy writing a third draft by keeping everything I have learned in my mind and using resources as needed. The process I will use is as follows:
1) Read through my feedback. (explanation of why I give certain feedback to certain students)
2) Review my boxes, bullets and brackets
3) Start writing my draft.
4) Review my resources as needed (anchor charts or resources in my portfolio).”
I will then show the studentshow I read through my feedback and think through it while I write. I will stop and think, “Hmmm…..how do I start off the introduction again (and then look at the introduction chart). I will stop and think, “What is a word I can use for said (and then pick a “flower” out of the words garden.”
Active Engagement: I will say,”Turn and tell your partner what you need to work on today, according to your feedback.” I will check for understanding by asking my different levels of learners (at least 3 students-one who is at standard, one is approaching standard, and one who is above standard).
Closing of Active Engagement: I will say, “Remember In order to plan another draft, successful writers practice the skill of reading the feedback on their last drafts and the strategy of keeping everything in mind by reviewing resources in order to write a third draft.”
Independent Practice: I will say, “Now you are going to write your third draft by keeping your other drafts in front of you.” They should write at least 25 minutes if not more. As they are working independently and quietly, (I like to play classical or smooth jazz for“writing”music (I just create a play list on Pandora Internet radio) I will confer with them about their writing).
Partner Work: Students will be directed share an example of what they have been working on. I will say,“Decide who will be partner A and who will be partner B. Partner A you will share the feedback you received and what you have been working on. Partner B, I want you to listen if Part A has is showing you an example that is logical compared to the feedback you were given. Give your partner feedback as to if they missed anything. Then switch.” .
Closing: For today students will turn in their drafts to me. I want to see if they added all the components of an essay and check on the volume of their writing. I am looking to see what revising or editing strategy most students need for the next day.
