Objective

SWBAT present information, findings, and supporting evidence clearly, concisely, and logically such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning by reading their narratives to their peers.

Big Idea

Finalists get to read for everyone!

Sharing in Small Groups

25 minutes

Students did not finish the group work from this morning's class. Most still need to share their third episodes, which I expected. Will we spend the first 20 minutes of class reading in the small groups and selecting which story should be shared with everyone (SL.9-10.1).

While students are reading, I will be watching and listening, trying to manage time. I want to make sure that we have time to read all four finalists' stories before the end of this hour.

The Four Lucky Winners Share

30 minutes

Each of the four groups chose one story/writer to share for the class (SL.9-10.1b). We will mimic the same format in this setting as we did in the small groups: each writer will read the first episode of their story (W.9-10.3a). Then the class will decide who will read their second episode first, simply by picking the story they are most interested in hearing more, and we will continue using this format (SL.9-10.3).

I am excited for the finalists to share their work and receive deserved accolades from their peers. I am also hoping that this half hour is a positive ending to this short unit, that it acts as closure and encourages students to feel accomplished.

Take a look at the first finalists sharing their work: finalists read. And here are two other full examples: Serial Story 1 and Serial Story 2.

Wrapping Up

5 minutes

In the last few minutes of class, I want to ask students what they thought about this unit: Did they like writing their own stories? What do they like/ dislike about sharing in this format? Their feedback is really important to me, as I think about this unit in the future and future creative writing projects with this group of students.
