To begin todays lesson, I ask students to take back out their mini-books that we made yesterday from their blue writing folders. I review with the students what we have learned so far(including: the functions of nouns, verbs, and adjectives, what the Latin language is, and how we still use parts of Latin today through adding word ending parts, or suffixes, to words we use daily). I also ask the students to open up their books and review the three Latin suffixes we entered into our books yesterday. We discuss the suffixes and what they do or mean!
Today, for the majority of our lesson, we’re going to be working on taking some notes in our mini books on a variety of Latin suffixes. Before we begin though, I flip back to our Latin Suffixes Chart on our easel to take a look together as a class at which suffixes we’ve learned about so far and which we’re going to work on learning about today!
Again today, I let the students know that they are learning some super information here about our language, and about how other languages have influenced our language! I ask if anyone told their families about how they’re learning about the Latin language yesterday! One student says yes, she did, and her mom said she didn’t learn about Latin until college! (I had to chuckle there!)
It’s time to get started taking notes in our books again today. Today, we’re working on Pages 5-7. I lead the students through setting up their books on the SmartBoard as they do the same in their books at their seats! You can see the pictures here in the Resource section to see what each page looks like after we’ve entered our notes for each page. Here’s a breakdown of what we enter onto each page for today:
Page 5: Suffix: -ify; Means: to make or cause to become; Example: humid – humidify
Page 6: Suffix: -ment; Changes a verb to a noun; Example: amaze – amazement
Page 7: Suffixes: -ty & -ity; Changes adjectives into nouns; Examples: royal – royalty & electric – electricity
Our time is up again for today, but tomorrow we’ll work more on our Latin Suffixes Books, so we tuck our books back into our blue writing folders to prepare to work on those more tomorrow!
