Objective

SWBAT produce clear and coherent friendly letters that will be sent to our current president, President Barack Obama.

Big Idea

In this lesson, students will work on writing the final draft of their letter to President Barack Obama.

Enroll Students Into Learning

5 minutes

To begin our work today, I’ve asked a few students if I could share their work with the class.  I tell the class that I want to share some great writing with them today!  I read a few of the rough draft letters out loud!  I tell the kids that I am so proud of each of their work and today is a special day-a day where we get to make “magic” happen yet again in our classroom!  Today we get to put together our final drafts for President Obama, the next step in publishing our writing to make it look finished and polished!

Experience Learning

Just as we started yesterday, I want to set the stage of expectation and show the students what I’d like them to do today as they publish their final drafts, so I start by showing an example.  I’ve created a final draft page for the students to use to write their letter on today.  The paper itself is nothing fancy, and I explain that tomorrow, we’ll get a little fancier with our presentation for President Barack Obama by creating pop up cards!  This letter will be inserted into the pop up card, so we want to do our nicest, neatest writing and ensure that we have followed all the conventions of writing, including proper capitalization, punctuation, etc.! I show the students that I follow the edits on my rough draft, and I also show students how I take my time and produce clear, neat handwriting that others can read and enjoy!

Label New Learning

5 minutes

At this point, I want to label for students that they are working on publishing their work today, so I say, “Okay third graders!  Let’s make some magic happen and start our publishing!”  Students come over to the table, pick up their final draft papers as I give them back their edited letters, and then get started at their desks!

Demonstrate Skills

10 minutes

As students are working, I circulate around the room and check that students are indenting, writing neatly, following the edits on their rough drafts, and working steadily on publishing their final drafts.  I also offer guidance or answer questions students may have.  As I walk around the room, there’s a slight hum… everyone’s working and engaged in their work!  Love that sound!

Review

5 minutes

As students finish up, I want to make sure that students have time to read their finished pieces to their classmates, so we have a few more students share their work with us!  I tell the students what a wonderful job they’ve done with their letters!  Tomorrow, we’ll get fancy and create some pop-up cards that will be sure to catch our President’s eye!
