Today is Free Read Friday. (The link here takes will take you to an earlier lesson with my reflection explaining Free Read Friday.) Students will read their personal library books for the first 15 minutes of class.
We have just returned from an extended Christmas Break due to several snow days, so during reading time today, I will allow students to visit the library if needed to get books, renew, etc.
Today, I will allow students to have digital discussions about the two texts they read yesterday. While they are discussing, I will monitor both by walking around the room and by viewing their discussion on my computer.
Their question is - what is the author's purpose or point of view in each piece?
I will ask each group of students to create a purpose statement for each article. This will require them to digitally discuss the piece and agree on the purpose rather than just share their own thinking.
To wrap up today, we will discuss aloud that "Head Trauma" was argument and "Delicious or Deadly" was informational.
We will look back at the pieces, review misconceptions and students will be asked to respond to an exit task on edmodo before tomorrow.
Identify one or two key ways to determine that an argument is being presented.
