Students will be using technology to publish their interviews. The CCSS writing standard 2.6 says that with guidance and support with adults, students will use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing including collaboration with peers.
In this lesson my students will be using a set of NEO 2 individualkeyboards that send their word document to a teacher computer. If you do not have this kind of technology, you may have your students type into a word document on a standing computer. Or you may have your students do the old-fashioned method of copying their published work onto a nice piece of paper.
The purpose of this lesson is that the students work collaboratively to create their finished product. Hopefully that contains a digital component for you.
Technology is a valuable tool to help students become better writers and collaborators (especially when publishing content on the internet, which allows for interactive feedback).
Whenever I refer to the NEO cart and NEO keyboards, please refer to your own form of technology, whether it be a pencil, or alphasmarts or individual student laptops.
There is a lot of pre-teaching for the use of the NEO 2’s required to make this lesson successful. While I will be doing that in my classroom, I am not going to include the classroom management foundation in this lesson.
Gather the students to the rug. They are familiar with the logistics of the NEO's and are eager to use them to publish their biographies.
Each team has two complete biography "books" of all the interview pages and the paragraphs written for each section. Today the students’ task will be to type the completed paragraphs into the NEO's and send each completed paragraph wirelessly to the my computer.
We are so close to completing the biographies about the adults in our school to display in the entrance of the school! You will be providing valuable information to students, parents and visitors to our school. We are ready to word process it - get it into the computer so we can make it look beautiful and easy to read.
Today our task will be to type our writing into the NEOs. Each of you has your own NEO and you know how to use it.
I explain the process:
· Students will type a section (1 paragraph usually) and send it to me.
· Then they can type another.
· Each biography is made up of about 11 paragraphs or sections.
· Each student need only type two or three paragraphs.
· I explain that I will print the formatted paragraphs and place them in a team folder.
I help the students divide the pages they will be responsible for typing.
I send the students off with their rough drafts and their neos.
. When all the pages have been typed in, and sent to my computer, I copy and paste the text into a word document. I will print the documents for the students to edit for conventions.
This is the students’ first go at keyboarding, and hunt and peck is not very accurate. I am interested in my students experiencing the word processing process, not mastering typing skills. That will come.
I ask the students to put their neos away and come to the carpet. This section is more about the teacher's workload, than the students' work, although they will be involved.
I show the students how I copy their typing work from the Neo Share folders and paste it into a word document. I explain the typing on the neos is great, but it is hard to see what needs to be corrected, and we will do that next.
We spend a few minutes "debriefing" how using the neos went, and answering any concerns they have with the process.
