As students enter the room, they will have a seat, take out their Problem of the Day (POD) sheet and begin to work on the question on the SMARTboard. The POD allows students to use MP 3 continually based on the discussions we have about the problem each day.
The POD today will be a simple question to bring the idea of solving a problem on finding the surface area of a rectangular prism to the forefront in their minds. I want students to effectively describe what needs to be covered (in terms of the faces of the prism) and how to find those dimensions. When they work to answer the actual Write It Wednesday question, I want them to know how to find the answer conceptually and just focus on preparing a solid, complete answer.
How would you measure the amount of paper needed to cover a box?
Students will work through the steps we use for Write It Wednesday
While students are working/writing, I will walk around and answer questions and help guide students through providing feedback and identifying gaps that might exist.
WIW Question:
How much paper do I need to wrap this box?
Identify and record the measurements necessary to calculate the amount of paper needed to wrap Dr. Jackson’s present. Describe the steps you used. Show all your work. (4 points)
To close, we will have a student (or two) come to the document camera and share their response to the question. We can also look at answers that need improvement and offer suggestions if the author is struggling with formulating an answer.
