The Art of Rhetoric Part 2 -Persuasion is All Around Us
Lesson 5 of 9
Objective: SWBAT identify persuasive appeals as used in advertising.
Today is Trailer Tuesday, so I will show students a book trailer or two depending on length. I select trailers for new release books and great books that students aren't picking up. (The link provided will take you to an earlier lesson with my reflection explaining more about my use of book trailers.)
There are several sites online for locating book trailers. A quick search on you tube will locate several. Of course, always preview the trailer before showing a class.
I will continue to walk students through the powerpoint we started yesterday beginning with slide 16 and stopping after the Zaption ads linked on slide 18.
I am connecting the Zaption tours below in addition to the links provided in the powerpoint for convenience. Note that there are questions in the Zaption Tours to allow you to stop and discuss student response. With either tour there are a variety of ways for students to respond -electronically with a classroom response system, edmodo polls, poll everywhere on cell phones or by holding up a piece of paper or white board. However you choose to do it, I suggest having all students respond. Then, chose one student to explain his or her response to the class.

Zaption Tour - Looking for Appeal in Popular Ads
I am linking a third tour that includes more ads. I allowed students to use these as extra practice. Use them or not as you like.
Zaption Tour - More Ads
Students will respond in their journal to the following:
Choose a favorite commercial. Describe it in detail -including the author's purpose. Then, identify the type of appeal being used in the ad and how the creator used that appeal to distinguish their purpose from that of others.
Finally, would you consider this a successful commercial? Why or why not?
