Present yourself!

Lesson Opener

5 minutes

In my lesson openers I always have a "connect" in which I connect students' thinking about yesterday's lesson to today's lesson. I then have a "teach" in which I model for students the lesson of the day and also have them try it out. When I think about my modeling, I use three categories; skill, strategy, and process. I model by stating the skill to the students, then giving them a strategy in which to use the skill, followed by the process to try out the strategy.

Connect:  I will say, “We have been working hard on our invention/business idea and now it is time to present them.

Teach: I will say, I am going to practice the skill of presenting by using a visual display. I am going to use the strategy of presenting my main points by using an appropriate volume and showing a visual display that helps others understand my project. The process I will use is as follows:

1) Come prepared with my main points and presentation finished

2) Make eye contact and use an appropriate volume

3) Speak clearly and coherently

4) Be prepared with possible answers to questions

Students will turn and talk about how their classmates did with the above yesterday. We will discuss as a class what we need to concentrate doing today and more importantly how we can support each other in using 1-4 by being reminded of the rubric.

Student Presentations

35 minutes

Student Presentations: Students who did not present yesterday will present in groups or individually by using “Prezis” and note cards that they have prepared the days prior. As students are presenting, the rest of the class is taking notes and preparing questions for the presenters. They are modifying their views on the topic and analyzing the main ideas presented. At the end of the presentation, the students will take at least two questions from their peers to answer.

Before students jot down notes I will remind of things I want to improve on today. Some of the things I predict I will have to remind students about are:

1) Asking the presenter higher level questions

2) Having a higher level idea about the main idea

Closing

5 minutes

Closing: For closing today students will be asked to fill out their reflection sheet. If they did not present today, they will be asked, "What did you think about the presentations overall? What do you think we should work on as a class in regards to presentations? Did you like "Prezi" and did it help or hurt your presentation?
