A New Kind of Bullying

SWBAT read about and discuss how millions of kids with food allergies in the United States are becoming the target of bullies.

Big Idea

Students will learn that what some kids who bully kids with food allergies think is a harmless prank can actually be life threatening.

I explain to my students that we are continuing our discussion on bullying today because it is a very important issue.  I tell them that bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior of school age children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance.  I remind them that bullying includes making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.  I tell them bullying may occur before, during, or after school; but no matter when it occurs it is still wrong.  I ask them how many of them know students who have been bullied and what did they do.  More than half of them know someone who has been bullied and some took actions like telling an adult or telling the bully to stop.

Text Features Tour

15 minutes

As a pre-reading activity, students begin to complete the attached Text Features Tour worksheet.  I explain to them that text features may include the title, captions, pictures, section headings, sidebars, words in bold print, italicized words, etc.  I instruct them to list 3 text features they see used in the Scholastic News article, "A New Kind of Bullying," and how the text features help them to better understand the information in the article.  Then, they make a prediction about the article.

Close Read

35 minutes

I begin the close read of the Scholastic News article, "A New Kind of Bullying,"in order to model fluency.  Then, I call on a few students to continue reading the article.  Once we complete reading the article, we discuss some text-based reading comprehension questions and review some Tier 2 vocabulary (see attached Powerpoint presentation).  During the close read, we discuss common food allergies - wheat, shellfish, eggs, tree nuts, soy, milk, peanuts, and fish.


5 minutes

To close the lesson, students finished completing the Text Features Tour worksheet on which they made a prediction as a pre-reading activity.  They respond to the question - Was your prediction correct?  If not, how would you revise your prediction? I write www.stopbullying.gov on the whiteboard and tell my students this is a valuable website resource to find out more information about how to stop bullying.
