**POD**

As students enter the room, they will have a seat, take out their **Problem of the Day** (POD) sheet and begin to work on the question on the SMARTboard. The POD allows students to use **MP 3** continually based on the discussions we have about the problem each day.

POD

Josh has been saving for a video game. Last year it cost $28. This year it costs $36. Find the percent of change in the cost. Round to the nearest whole percent if necessary.

#### Explore

*30 min*

To explore finding the percent change, students will work with a partner to solve the problem they receive in their envelope. The envelopes will circulate so that some partners will receive the same problems but each time we switch they will receive a new question. Once each pair has had the opportunity to answer each question we will put the solutions on the SMART board to show the class different ways to solve the problem. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions of each other to support their thinking.

#### Landing

*5 min*

To end class today, students will use the **Traffic Light** activity to determine where students are with percent of change. If they feel comfortable with it, we can move on to the next activity using the concept. If not, we can try some intervention steps to increase their comfort and understanding.

Tell me your level of comfort and understanding with percent of change. Can you explain the concept to someone else (green)? Can you complete a problem with some guidance (yellow)? Do you feel like I am speaking another language when I say percent of change (red)?
