Objective

SWBAT demonstrate their analysis and understanding of the text they read yesterday with multiple choice and short answer questions.

Big Idea

I think we're on the right road now!

Warm up

15 minutes

To open class today, I'll again have this quote on the SMART board. Walt Disney said, “All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me... You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”

I will ask students to write a follow up journal entry considering what they have read about Lexi, Ariel and Kevin.

What are your thoughts about the quote now?  Have they changed at all?  How do these three examples validate that quote... or not?

Independent Work/Assessment

35 minutes

Students will use their text maps (displayed between the partners) along with their own copy of the magazine to complete this task. I will ask them to reread.  Then, they will answer 8 multiple choice  and 2 short answer questions that ask them to make connections between the text, use details from the material, make inferences and countless other common core aligned tasks.

The multiple choice questions are from scholastic's materials, but I use my own short answer questions -included here.

Note that as we discussed in a previous lesson, students are going to use the graphic organizer from The Common Core Guidebook: Informational Text Lessons to ensure success with their summary.

Wrap Up

5 minutes

To close class today, students will self-assess the short answer response they have just completed.  I will display the scoring rubric on the SMART board for student reference.

Students will place their responses in the caddy before dismissal.
