## Objective

## Launch

10 minutes

Opener:  As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener.  Please see my instructional strategy clip for how openers work in my classroom (Instructional Strategy - Process for openers).  This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is mathematical practice 3.

Learning Target:  After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students.  In today’s lesson, the intended targets are, “I can solve real world and mathematical problems involving addition and subtraction of integers.  I understand and can use vocabulary related to addition and subtraction of integers .” Students will jot the learning target down in their agendas (our version of a student planner, there is a place to write the learning target for every day).

Two Group Review Strategy : For today's review, I am going to do my classic two group review, where students are split into two groups and are responsible for discussing and helping all students in their group, before I make my choice of which student is responsible for doing the problem for the class for points.  This method of review really makes students take charge of their own learning, and requires them to explain their reasoning to others when disagreements on correct solutions arise (mathematical practice 3).  Additonally, the problems I have chosen require students to model real world scenarios using mathematical expressions and equations (mathematical practice 2 and 4), and show their work using a variety of methods - models, pictures, equations.  Students will persevere with problems within their groups as I will NOT be offering any assistance (mathematical practice 1)!
