Opener: As students enter the room, they will immediately pick up and begin working on the opener. Please see my instructional strategy clip for how openers work in my classroom (Instructional Strategy - Process for openers). This method of working and going over the opener lends itself to allow students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, which is mathematical practice 3.
Learning Target: After completion of the opener, I will address the day’s learning targets to the students. In today’s lesson, the intended targets are, “I can solve real world and mathematical problems involving addition of integers.” Students will jot the learning target down in their agendas (our version of a student planner, there is a place to write the learning target for every day).
Adding Integers Test: Students will take a 40 question open response test on addition of integers. With this test, it will be very important that students are precise (MP 6) when providing answers. Since there is not a lot of work a child can show (since they probably add in their head), students will need to be very careful when assigning a sign to a number, as well as paying attention to the sign of the addends that they started with. Additionally, students will be expected to work through all problems individually (MP 1) without the help of their peers or me! Students are encouraged to utilize tools (MP 5) such as the number line or chips to help them solve problems.
