Objective

SWBAT solve word problems with estimation.

Big Idea

Students estimate and solve word problems.

Do Now

5 minutes

Students have been working on estimating fractions and fraction sums.  I've noticed from previous assessments that students have had difficulty with estimating 1/3 and 2/3, so the Do Now is based on students being able to show a visual model of both fractions compared to 1/2.

Do Now

Create a visual representation for the fractions 1/3 and 2/3 compared to the fraction 1/2.

After about 5 minutes, I will select the higher level students to come up to the board and draw their representations for their classmates to see.  I will select the lower level students to share their thoughts about their classmates work.  My selection of students is based on: I know that the higher level students will be more accurate in their visual representations and the lower level students have been struggling with the why. We will discuss and compare the diagrams.

Group Work

35 minutes

This is the second day of the activity. (See Estimating Fraction Sums in Word Problems, Day 1)  Students will continue to work with their groups to complete the BL Estimating Sums Group Problems worksheet.

They will have about 20 minutes to complete the worksheet and then we will review the answers as a group.  I will randomly select students to share their answers and explanations.  It is important to hear from a few students for each question so students can evaluate different explanations.

Lesson Review

5 minutes

I will review the concepts of overestimation and underestimation with students.  I would like them to be able to make real world connections using their own experiences.

Has you ever been in a situation where you underestimated or overestimated an amount?
