Yesterday, students read the myth, “Daedalus and Icarus” by Geraldine McCaughrean, marking the text to identify the parts of a plot line. Working in a small group, they also noted themes and supported these ideas with textual evidence from the text. Today, students shared the events within the plot lines in their small groups, listening and verifying the details. Changes were made if necessary.
Before beginning to design their plot line, the class recalled yesterday’s lesson (Artistic Interpretation of “Daedlus and Icarus”) in which we viewed two artists’ interpretation of the climax of this myth. We discussed how each artist artistically analyzed the climax through their own eyes. In the same respect, each student’s plot line will display various scenes.
Using their marked text from yesterday, students createdd a rough draft of the plot checking for organization and then progressed to creating a detailed, illustrated plot line. I expected it to be detailed, neat, colorful, and retell the story of “Icarus and Daedalus.”
As a closure, I ask students to refer back to their notes about theme from yesterday's lesson. Individually, they located illustrations from their plot line that they felt demonstrated examples of the theme. Then the small groups shared details from each other's plot line determining if these illustrations did indeed support themes identified.
