Today is Free Read Friday. Students will read their personal library books for the first 15 minutes of class.
Today is a switch in routine...Independent Work comes first as I want students to finish chapter 36 before beginning the assignment.
Students will listen to the audio -picking up where we left in the last class - and follow in their books. As they do they will be very involved in the text, actively reading per the instructions on the Reading Circle sheets.
When the class finishes chapter 36, I will stop the reading and move to the lesson.
Students will work in groups to summarize the events in chapters 35-36. To do this they will create a 1-2 minute narrative newscast as if they are an anchor reporting on the events that happened at the ball on the nightly news. The may use excerpts from the book to create their scene/report.
To help students with their summary, I will ask that they focus on the "gist" of what happened. They obviously can't include everything in 1-2 minutes, so I'll ask that they do the "gist".
I'll share this sample script with the class - just to give them a model. I do not expect it to be this elaborate. In fact, I do not want them getting bogged down with the details of the report. So, we will talk about how news anchors report with the help of voice overs and on scene reporters. I'll let them know there are many creative or simple ways to do this, but how they proceed is their decision. (I like allowing my students to take off on their own. Many times this is were I get the best work.)
Groups will work together to create, write and direct. They will have time in class tomorrow before sharing and may use their laptops or class iPhones to record or do a live report. (If using iPhones or laptops the newscast should be shared with me to play for the class.) However, I want them to focus on writing the summary/script today.
Wrap up time is spent allowing students to "debrief" independently - collecting their post its and/or completing their thoughts and asking question for both their Reading Circle sheets and objective summaries. I will remind them that they will share these in class Monday.
