Warm Up

Today is Free Read Friday.  Students will read their personal library books for the first 15 minutes of class.

 

Lesson

Today, I am introducing my students to a tool that we will use throughout the year. I should preface this by saying that I do not promote teaching vocabulary in isolation; however, I do believe in the power of practice, repetition and gaming.  Therefore, I require that my students create an account on Quizlet and assign vocabulary flashcard sets throughout the year that match up to our current unit.  

Students are able to study and play games using the terms.  I am able to see their activity, and use the site to challenge and motivate them to work with the specialized vocabulary involved in language arts class  including spelling the words correctly.  It is amazing how many of my students will not go near words like "hyperbole" in the classroom, but suddenly master it after using Quizlet.  The repetitive nature of the site pushes the terms to their long term memory, so when we work with them at school they are already there for me to add meaning and purpose.

Today's lesson is basically a demonstration and walk through of setting up Quizlet.  My students will create an account and begin working with the first set.  They will have the next few weeks (working on their own at home or during after school time or free time in classes) to complete the "learn mode" which demonstrates that they have worked with the entire set.  They also can compete in the games Scatter and Space Race for bonus points awarded to those in the top spots.

Independent Work

25 minutes

At this point, I will ask students to take the Reading Circle sheet for section three from the caddy and review the instructions.  I will point out the changes for this section -a continued focus on figurative language and the addition of allusion and imagery for example.

Students will listen to the audio -picking up at the beginning of Book Three of Cinder - and follow in their books. As they do they will be very involved in the text, actively reading per the instructions on the Reading Circle sheets.

I will allow the class to read until the last five minutes of class time and record their stopping point.

Wrap Up

5 minutes

Wrap up time is spent allowing students to "debrief" independently - collecting their post its and/or completing their thoughts on their Reading Circle sheets. We always discuss questions or concerns before class is dismissed.
