Objective

SWBAT correctly identify allusions in text.

Big Idea

It's no illusion; there are allusions everywhere.

Warm Up

5 minutes

Students will begin class with an Edmodo quiz.  The daily agenda will instruct the class to log into their Edmodo accounts for a warm up quiz.  After logging in they will find the quiz instructs them to locate the definition of allusion in their Quizlet flashcard set. Then, they are to use that information to respond to the questions below.

Reread the following quote from page 74 of Cinder, "Wakey, wakey, sleeping beauty." The quote includes an example of which of the following?

After the results are in and we review the questions, I will ask students who or what is being compared to sleeping beauty or Willy Wonka? Then, we will discuss the difference between an allusion and a metaphor.

Lesson

10 minutes

Today's lesson is very brief.  First to reinforce the concept of allusion, I will share the video below with students and discuss the abundance of allusions in pop culture.

 

Finally, I will ask students to reread page 78 of their Cinder book and with a partner, and identify the allusion used in the text.  

The allusion I am looking for is from this quote:

"Ah! Juliet awakens." (obviously alluding to Shakespeare's Juliet.)

We'll share this and discuss.  Then, I'll remind them to look for allusions in the text as they read for their reading circle notes, and as with similes, metaphors, hyperbole and personification, I will challenge students to note allusions they see in their world.

Independent Work

25 minutes

Students will listen to the audio -picking up where we left in the last class - and follow in their books. As they do they will be very involved in the text, actively reading per the instructions on the Reading Circle sheets.

I will allow the class to read until the last five minutes of class time and record their stopping point.

 

Wrap Up

5 minutes

Wrap up time is spent allowing students to "debrief" independently - collecting their post its and/or completing their thoughts on their Reading Circle sheets. We always discuss questions or concerns before class is dismissed.
