Objective

SWBAT to solve problems by performing operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation.

Big Idea

Now that students have practiced basic operations (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) with bare numbers expressed in scientific notation, they are ready to solve problems within a real-world context.

Warm Up

8 minutes

For today's Warm Up assignment, students must use their knowledge of scientific notation to solve two problems. As students work, I move throughout the room checking student work. I am watching for common errors like applying incorrect operations or failing to write numbers in scientific notation correctly.

Once the timer sounds after 5 minutes, I call the students to the smart board to go over the answers. I call on random students (selected from a cup of name sticks) to share the answers they found. We then work to come to consensus by class verification.

Learning Objective

After finishing our work with the Work Time problems, I introduced the day's Learning Objective. I want my students to be aware of the objective so they more adequately reflect on their level of acquisition.

Work Time

30 minutes

For today's Work Time assignment, I have selected a task from the Math Assessment Project called a_million_dollars_task. The task requires students to calculate a variety of  numbers like the number of hamburgers that can be purchased with a million dollars.

Once student finish the task, I instruct students to create their own million dollar task problem.

Wrap Up

6 minutes

For today's Wrap Up, I asked students to exchange their created problems with another student to solve. Once finished, they turn in their papers on the way out the door.
