Objective

SWBAT see common themes and ideas in paired text.

Big Idea

Paired text are like peas in a pod - a healthy match.

Warm Up

15 minutes

To open class today, I'll have this quote on the SMART board.

Walt Disney said, “All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me... You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.”

Students will be asked to respond in their journals to this quote and the question, "Is Disney right?"  An example must be given to support their choice.  

The last five minutes will be spent sharing their thoughts in small group discussion at their table.  Then, the class will vote by a show of hands. (I will note the number of yes and no votes for each class to compare to later.)

 

 

Independent Work

35 minutes

Today, students will get back to where we started our first nonfiction work - learning about real, young people who have faced great adversity and not only survived, but came out stronger.

The paired texts for today come from Scholastic Scope's Common Core Reader.  The texts are not available for sharing here, but can be purchased from Scholastic (see video for more information).

Students will read:

"Lexi Youngberg, Invincible" -Narrative Nonfiction Article

"I Will Not Get Out of Heart Yet" -Primary Document

"Prosthetics of Tomorrow" - Infographic

After reading students will answer 8 multiple choice and three short answer questions (located within the magazine).  These ask them to make connections between the text, use details from the material, make inferences and countless other common core aligned tasks. I love the way the questions require students to stretch their thinking across three very different types of text.

Wrap Up

5 minutes

To wrap up, I will ask students to put their responses in the caddy.  I am very interested in their work as this is the first "paired text" task.

We will also briefly discuss if any of the material made them think differently about Disney's quote.  I want them thinking about this after class today.
