It’s Time for a Revolution! Boom! Boom!

Lesson Introduction

The American Revolution was the first modern revolt that marked the first time in history people fought for their independence in the name of certain universal principles, constitutional rights, and popular sovereignty. To introduce the second part of this unit to students, I will ask them to create a strong argumentative statement about Americans during the revolutionary time period. Students have learned in history classes that this period encompass the identity of FREEDOM. It wasn’t just individuals who fought to establish their identity during this time but laws, documents, and power fought to establish freedoms for all.

Bell Ringer

10 minutes

To hook students in this lesson, they will be given three minutes to develop statements about the Revolutionary War. I want students to use their creative minds to develop a statement from the perspective of people or on lookers during this time. I could have easily given students examples ofwhat to write. However, this would have blocked the creativity students could have used in this activity Students will share their statements with a shoulder buddy. Possible statements from students might include:

1. Tension between the colonist led to a revolt to declare independence from Britian

2. Known for its infamous Boston Tea Party Revolt

3. Origin of Declaration of Independence

Building Knowledge

7 minutes

Students will watch a 6 minute clip on the events during the American Revolution. As students
watch the video, they will jot down ideas on a sticky note about nouns (people, places, things, and ideas) repeated in the video. Students will share out what they discovered from this visual representation of events.


Then students will take this information and create a left-sided possiblity activity about their understanding of the American Revolution from scenes, images, and notes taken in their notebooks. Independent Practice

25 minutes

The remaining part of this lesson allows students to understand the sense of pride that is represented by our American flag. Our national anthem gives off the pride our nation felt during the past time of war, victories, and defeat. Students will work in pairs to read the Star-Spangled-Banner-History. This activity requires students to answer pre and post-reading questions about the significance of the flag's position and how it serves as a symbol of VICTORY for America.  


5 minutes

Students will take 8 vocabulary words from the poem, The Star-Spangled Banner, and create ice cream cones locating the part of speech, definition, synonym, and affix of each word. The words students will find from the poem include

bombarded, invaded, negotiated, perilous, gallantly, haughty, vauntingly, desolation

The words listed above are just sample words that students can use to create their cones. See the BEAUTIFUL examples (Ice Cream Cone 1,Ice Cream Cone 2 and,Ice Cream Cone 3 ) of how students completed this task. One thing to note is that not all vocabulary words will have an affix (ending added to the main word). However, all of the other scoops can be filled out with the use of a reference book such as a dictionary.
