Objective

SWBAT use basic tools and menus on Geometer's Sketchpad; SWBAT measure distances between points and lengths of segments; SWBAT construct the midpoint of a segment.

Big Idea

Student Drivers Behind the Wheel. In this lesson we turn over the controls to allow students to do some dynamic exploration of points, segments, rays, and lines using Geometer's Sketchpad.

Introduction to Sketchpad Basics

25 minutes

For this section, we go to the computer lab. I use the Introducing Points, Segments, Rays, and Lines activity from Exploring Geometry with The Geometer's Sketchpad Version 5 by Key Curriculum Press.

The activity introduces students to some of the basic Sketchpad functionalities while guiding them through an exploration of points, segments, rays and lines. Throughout the activity, students are asked a series of conceptual questions to make sure they understand what they are doing. I require students to answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper to be handed in.

See this video to get a feel for the types of things students will be doing in the activity.

More on Points, Segments, Rays and Lines

35 minutes

In this section, students work on the More on Points Segments Rays Lines resource, which is a student-centered activity. This is a chance for students to apply what they have learned in the previous section. Students may ask, "How do I do this?" or "What do you want me to do?", but in this activity, it is their job to decide what to do. It really is the point of the exercise.
