Do Now
To ready students for today's lesson, I reviewed a completed story elements graphic organizer from a previous lesson to activate prior learning. I explained they were going to write events from the story, The Ballad of Mulan, on the blank organizer they had received. They would use it to guide them as they retold the story.
I explained they would then create a slide show recounting the story of Mulan. I displayed a set of story element cards I had made as an example on the document camera and made the connection to the GO. I explained each card which contained each element; characters, setting, problem, and solution. Finally, I demonstrated creating the slide show video using the index cards and iPad.

Independent Practice
Working in pairs, students completed the graphic organizer, created their story cards, and recorded their videos on the story, The Ballad of Mulan, by Song Nan Zhang. The story is about a girl who disguises herself as a boy and joins the army in order to fight in her elderly father's place. I circulated around the room checking organizers for correct information and giving feedback as needed.
