What have students learned about college? What questions do they still have? Students work on wrapping up and reflecting on the College Project.

Often, I create do nows that have problems that connect to the task that students will be working on that day. I want students to practice using percents to find a portion of a larger amount money. They will have to do this on the Financial Aid pages of the College Project that they are finishing today.

I ask students to share out their strategies for finding 50% and 60%. I want students to be able to explain that 50% is equivalent to ½ of the tuition. There are many ways we can find ½ of an amount. Students may have different ideas on how to calculate 60% of the tuition. Some students may find 10% and add that to 50%. Other students may multiply the 0.6 by the tuition. Others may connect 60% with 3/5 and work to find 1/5 of the tuition and then 3/5.

I give students a few minutes to review the rubric. How many needs and wants do you need to list to get 4 points? How many great things do you need to list about yourself for the scholarships page? What do you need to do to get a 4 on the reflection?

30 minutes

I let students sit in groups of their own choosing. I pass out the **Group Work Rubric **and review expectations. I explain that what students do not finish today will be homework. I remind students to use the Reflection Draft page before they write the final draft of their reflection.

As students work, I walk around to monitor student progress. Students are engaging in **MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them**.

If students are struggling, I may intervene in the following ways:

- Have the student set up the percent ruler with what they know. Work to find 50%, 10%, and 5% first.
- Give students a calculator to check their work.
- Pull a small group to work together.

If students successfully complete their work, I will ensure that they have reviewed the rubric and checked their work. Then I will give them the following choices:

- Choose to help a student (I choose who they will work with)
- Work on Decimal Riddles
- Play math computer games
- PBS Cyberchase
- Sumdog
- Math Playground
- Put them in charge of collecting reflection data from classmates
- I am going to create word cloud using wordle.
- Students can collect data from classmates, organize it, and type it into a word document.

15 minutes

For **Closure **I ask my students to share what they have learned about college and money. I have students participate in a **Think Pair Share. **What questions do they still have? What are you going to work on so that you can get into the college of your choice? I use student responses to create a word cloud at www.wordle.net .

I do not give a ticket to go, since it was a project workday.** **For **Homework, **I let students know that they need to finish their College Project. I set a deadline for handing in completed projects.
